Climate & Conditions

Designing for Tasmania

Tall, slender spherical topiary trees rising above abundant purple lavender and garden paths.

Tasmania’s growing conditions are closer to those of the UK and northern Europe than anywhere else in Australia. Cool summers, cold winters, reliable rainfall and rich soils across Hobart, Launceston, the Huon Valley and the Derwent Valley create an environment where a wide range of formal and structured planting can genuinely thrive.

Whittemore Brown Design’s European influenced approach translates particularly well to Tasmanian conditions. The plant species, material palettes and structural forms that define the work are well suited to a cool temperate climate and perform better here than in many mainland locations.
