Climate & Conditions

Designing for South Australia

South Australia’s Mediterranean climate shares characteristics with the gardens of southern France and Italy that have long informed Whittemore Brown Design’s approach. Dry summers, cool winters and the particular soil conditions of the Adelaide Plains and Hills create an environment well suited to formal, structured garden design using species and materials proven in similar climates.

Away from the coast, conditions shift considerably across the Barossa, Clare Valley and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Hotter summers, variable rainfall and different soil types require specific knowledge and careful plant selection to achieve gardens that establish well and perform over time.
