A planting-led approach grounded in horticulture, landscape design and European garden traditions.

Background

A Foundation in Horticulture

Ben Whittemore

Ben Whittemore’s background begins with horticulture. Before pursuing landscape design qualifications he spent years working directly with plants, building and maintaining gardens. That grounding continues to shape the work.

In 2004 he answered a job advertisement in a local newspaper. Scott Brown was looking for someone to work alongside him in his landscaping business. Ben joined the company and initially focused on horticulture and maintenance, developing the plant knowledge that now sits at the centre of his design work.

More than twenty years later the partnership remains the foundation of Whittemore Brown Design.

Site Context

Experience and Qualifications

Ben holds qualifications in horticulture and landscape design. His understanding of how gardens establish, mature and are maintained over time comes from years of hands-on work across a wide range of sites, scales and climates.

That practical knowledge informs every design decision he makes.

Design Influence

Influences

Ben’s design sensibility draws heavily from European garden traditions, particularly the formal landscapes of France, Italy and England. The material finishes and structural forms that define those traditions continue to inform his thinking.

Those influences are not applied literally. Instead, their structure, proportion and design logic are interpreted and adapted to Australian climates and landscapes.

The gardens that interest him most are those that feel inevitable, as though the design could not have been any other way given the site and its surroundings.

Design Approach

Approach

Ben’s role in a project begins with the site itself. How it sits in its landscape, what the soil is doing, and which plants will perform under those conditions.

The design follows from that reading rather than preceding it. Planting is never an afterthought. It is the starting point. Structures, materials and built elements are selected to support and frame the garden, not define it.

That principle runs through every Whittemore Brown Design project.
