Scott Brown

A construction-led approach grounded in landscape knowledge, structure and practical experience.

Background

Built From the Ground Up

Scott Brown

At the age of 23 Scott founded Spectra-Scape, a landscaping business in Sydney. Long before that he had spent most of his life in gardens.

Growing up, his father maintained an immaculate garden. Vegetable beds, fruit trees and lawns were tended through weekends of quiet, steady work. At around nine years old Scott was given his own plot to care for, with one clear expectation: it had to be maintained to the same standard as the rest of the garden.

That early accountability shaped everything that followed.

Site Context

Scott holds qualifications in structural landscaping, horticulture and irrigation. He founded Spectra-Scape in 2000, building it into an established landscaping business operating across New South Wales. Years of managing complex builds across a wide range of sites, scales and conditions now form the foundation his design work draws from.

For the past fifteen years he has also taught at Padstow TAFE, passing on practical construction and horticultural knowledge to the next generation of landscape professionals.

Design Influence

Influences

Scott’s design thinking is shaped by construction knowledge applied from the ground up. Decades of working with demanding clients, many bringing high expectations and significant investment to their projects, have set the standard that runs through his work.

He holds a particular interest in gardens that have been allowed to decline. Restoring a neglected garden to its original condition and intent requires the same understanding of what a garden should be as designing one from the beginning. That interest in recovery and renewal remains a consistent thread through his work.

Design Approach

Approach

Scott’s contribution to a project lies in knowing what can actually be built, to what standard and at what cost. That discipline is applied during the design stage rather than after construction begins.

The result is that every Whittemore Brown Design plan is not only resolved on paper but achievable in the ground.

Where a project calls for structural rigour, Scott provides it. Where the brief requires restraint, his construction knowledge ensures that restraint is deliberate rather than accidental.
