The Studio

Planting-led gardens shaped by structure and timeless design.

Studio Overview

Approach

Whittemore Brown Design was established on a conviction that gardens should be designed from the ground up, from soil type and climate through to the final planting. That approach has not changed in thirty years.

The studio works within a formal, structured tradition, drawing on French, Italian and English precedents and interpreting them for Australian conditions. The result is gardens that feel rooted in their surroundings, composed with proportion and restraint, and built to improve over time.

The Partnership

Ben Whittemore and Scott Brown have worked together for over twenty years, combining horticultural knowledge, design understanding and construction expertise across every stage of a project.

Ben brings a deep understanding of planting and European garden traditions, while Scott contributes structural knowledge and practical construction experience. Together, their combined approach allows the studio to create gardens that are both beautifully resolved and realistically buildable.

That balance between design and execution is uncommon in the industry and remains central to the studio’s work today.

Design Philosophy

Philosophy

A close-up of a designer's hand pointing to architectural lines on a detailed courtyard garden blueprint.

A garden designed to last is not defined by trends. It is defined by the quality of its materials, the logic of its structure and the appropriateness of its planting. Whittemore Brown Design pursues that standard across every project, from expansive rural properties to restrained urban courtyards.

Planting is always the starting point. Structures, materials and built elements are selected to support and frame the garden rather than dominate it, allowing landscapes to feel grounded, enduring and connected to their surroundings.
