Pear Lane

A terraced foreshore garden shaped by planting, structure and seasonal living.

Site Context

The Site

The existing pool was fully renovated and extended, and the broader space was reimagined as a series of terraced garden rooms, each with its own purpose and feel, connected by a considered flow that makes the most of every level change across the site.

Planting as Architecture

Rather than relying on built structures to define spaces, the design uses planting to create enclosure, shade and spatial definition throughout the garden.

Craftsmanship

The Pear Avenue

A long dining table with woven chairs leading toward a glowing fire pit framed by trees.

The centrepiece of the design is the main dining area, positioned beneath a formal avenue of deciduous pear trees. In summer, the canopy provides generous shade across the entertaining space, while in winter the bare branches allow sunlight to filter naturally through the garden.

This seasonal rhythm brings both practicality and atmosphere to the space, creating a garden that adapts beautifully throughout the year.

Outcome

The Result

Planting selections drew reference from the home’s existing aesthetic and the clients’ own preferences, blending formal structure with a restrained European sensibility.

As the garden matures, the pear trees and surrounding planting will continue to deepen the sense of enclosure and greenery while preserving generous open space for family life and entertaining by the water.
